Even Google admits - grudgingly - that it is losing the spam wars. The explosive proliferation of botshit has supercharged the sleazy "search engine optimization" business, such that results to common queries are 50% Google ads to spam sites, and 50% links to spam sites that tricked Google into a high rank (without paying for an ad):

A wall of Spam cans stacked many layers high and deep. Superimposed over it are UI elements from the Google 1998 homepage: a search box, a 'Google Search' button, and an 'I'm feeling lucky' button. The middle four rows of Spam cans have been colorized to match the Google four-color logo tones.

My Google display refused to give me the definition or. Broadcast the word ‘enshitification’.
It never ceases to amaze me that the Tech-Bros can't seem to figure out (even as they do it themselves) that any system that can be engineered/automated can be reverse engineered.

If AI were actually a thing, this would not happen. But AI is not a thing in the sense of being any kind of actual intelligence.

The only way out is actual intelligence (i.e. human beings) applied to the problem, but Google doesn't want to pay people and what crowd would want to help Google take even more money from us, so crowd sourcing is probably not an issue.
@lisamelton thw most funny error Google makes is that on specific searches for goods it blocked the website were I usually ordered those goods. (what Google should know as it also advertised itself with Google)

Google search died some years ago...

And of course Google tries to paint this as the spammers abusing their nice service, but reading accounts like this one from The Luddite would seem to indicate Google is the one at fault to begin with, and they're just reaping the seeds they've already sown:

It feels a bit like the Butlerian Jihad might be about to be triggered with minimal bloodshed and instead by despair over the death of the useful digital realm.

Can we maybe hope there will be a "killing of thinking machines" that happens within the next year and involves rolling back the interwebs to a time before all this AI generated bullshit started getting posted?

I don't think I'm crazy for imagining this as a possible reality.
reading through Ed Zitron’s post is truly sickening. How this #prabhakarraghavan kills off two search engines is an excellent example of poor vetting of candidates during the recruitment process. #failingup indeed
