One thing Myspace had going for it: it was exuberantly ugly. The decision to let users with no design training loose on a highly customizable user-interface led to a proliferation of Myspace pages that vibrated with personality.

A collection of punk zines with the glaring eye of HAL 9000 from Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey' in the center of the image.

Oh, it all just depends on which kind of images you put into your training set. When you look at open source diffusion models, you'll find stuff that no corporation would ever allow in any of their official products.

@acb
I like those images which look like the hallucinations of a profoundly inhuman intelligence that is somehow intelligent, but has no real mind, no real understanding. The more disturbing the images, the better.
One thing I absolutely love about image generators is how easily you can make really disturbing, horrifying images with them. And incredibly silly meaningless trippy outlandish images.
I had hoped your essay would end with a satisfying answer to this concern, but I missed it. Must we adapt to the imposed weird usurped asthetic of recycled post-human creativity, or is there still a dark back street somewhere we can create and some splintered wooden power line pole to which our humanity can be stapled.
love this post so much, Cory.

Quibble: 4chan was incubating neofascism at the very same time that it gave rise to Anonymous. They are not as distinct as one would like to think, necessarily.
@lisamelton

Speak for yourself! I had my pick of software engineer and design students on my dorm floor design mine, it was beautiful 😝

Sigh, MySpace. One of so many missed opportunities to free myself of the guilt for never having bothered to decorate my high school locker. 😿
