The big news in search this week is that Google is continuing its transition to "AI search" - instead of typing in search terms and getting links to websites, you'll ask Google a question and an AI will compose an answer based on things it finds on the web:

A cane-waving carny barker in a loud checked suit and straw boater. His mouth has been replaced with the staring red eye of HAL9000 from Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey.' He stands on a backdrop composed of many knobs, switches and jacks. The knobs have all been replaced with HAL's eye, too. Above his head hovers a search-box and two buttons reading 'Google Search' and 'I'm feeling lucky.' The countertop he leans on has been replaced with a code waterfall effect as seen in the credit sequences of the Wachowskis' 'Matrix' movies. Standing to his right on the countertop is a cartoon mascot with white gloves and booties and the head of a grinning poop emoji. He is striped with the four colors of the Google logo. To his left is a cluster of old mainframe equipment in miniature.

While this discussion is primarily about LLM-generated summaries, the tendency to “trust someone to summarize the truth for you” applies just as well to news (and “news”) sources with self-serving motives. If all your information about current events comes through one or two sources, you probably won’t even notice when that information is being distorted along the way.

plus, Google can make more money by enshittifying their AI bot so that all it feeds back to you is the botshit, SEO spam, and payola. Maybe it starts out giving a clean summary, in the best case, but over time, what stops history from repeating itself, and the Google AI from sliding down the same Shitty Technology Adoption Curve as the original Google, just using vastly more resources in the process?

This new offering of an AI search engine reminds me of the radio receiver on board with the crew on Hitchhiker's Guide, used for listening to music, news, and entertainment, where it had become so unusable that they've just throw something in the direction of the sensitive and elaborate frequency tuning mechanism, hoping the tuning dial would land on something listenable.
