Regardless, the problem with police is not that many are “poorly trained” or that “many are abusive.” The fundamental point of policing in America is abuse! This isn’t a “whoops” mistake, it’s an institution of violence.

Cops aren’t trained poorly; they are trained precisely to hurt you. That’s why they hurt so many people!

@chairman_meh @ParanoidFactoid Cops stealing large amounts of cash from highway travellers has become an issue. They claim it's drug money and steal thousands under "black asphalt" programs. This is quite literally highway robbery, which historically has been a capital offense. Still is, as any cops who knew another cop that got shot in a traffic stop can attest. These too are generally armed robberies.

Salt Lake City Police Broke A Woman’s Leg During An Arrest. Weeks Later, It Had To Be Amputated.
"Last September, Agnes Martinez was looking for a place she and her dog could sleep for the night. Houseless at the time, she parked her car in a commercial area south of downtown Salt Lake City. Soon after, she was confronted by two Salt Lake City Police officers in an encounter that would end with the loss of her left leg."

Tom Perez called the local police non-emergency line to report his elderly father missing. Thirty-six hours later, Perez was on a psychiatric hold in a hospital, having been pressured into confessing he killed his dad and trying to take his own life.

A man in California reported his father missing and decided that he must have actually murdered his father.

So, they used sleep deprivation to torture him into falsely confessing, arrested him, and held him in a psychiatric facility after he tried to self-harm in response to the abuse.

They held him even after they discovered his father was alive and, after locating the father at an airport, arrested the father too.

The police do not exist to solve or prevent crime. They exist to produce compliance, obedience, and passivity.

Wow there must be so many bad apples
@RD
The problem with the "bad apples" idea is that police aren't like apples at all.

Well, unless we mean apples genetically engineered to be bad, that would make some sense lol
@RD4Anarchy Also the original saying was “one bad apple spoils the whole barrel,” not that one bad apple meant the rest are OK
@RD
@RD4Anarchy
the police problem is not bad apples
it is bad pickers and bad apple growers,
and a bad apple market
which encourages the production and distribution
of clearly poisonous fruit
@RD
@RD4Anarchy Consider the rest of that aphorism that nobody seems to remember:

“A few bad apples spoil the bunch”

So, uh, yes a few bad cops spoil… all the other cops. They’re all spoiled, top to bottom. Accurate
@RD
@nathandh
It still doesn't work for me because while individual cops may be further spoiled by other cops, that's not the source of the core problem of police which is an institution that is spoiled from its very roots.

The claim that we need the state to protect us against abusers is a popular and superficial anti-anarchism "gotcha". In reality, as anarchists know, the state jealously guards its monopoly on legitimate violence by *preventing* us from defending ourselves and our families against abuse. Here's an all too typical story about a Colorado mother who was jailed for defying a court order to "reconcile" her children with their father, a former cop who is facing charges of sexually abusing three of his daughters.

Between this and the “selling guns” story, I struggle to understand the distinction between “the cops” and “the cartels” they’re supposed to be guarding us against.

Three things jump out at me from news stories like this:

- The US government has been involved in providing children as essentially slave labor.

- No amount of “we’ve conquered poverty!” cheerleading from outlets like Our World in Data can paper over the catastrophic failure of “capitalist progress” that child labor represents.

- Capitalists would absolutely enslave you and your children if they could, and we know this because they literally enslave children when they can get away with it.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna96480
Also, this is Joe Biden’s administration, not Donald Trump’s. The idea that there’s a meaningful difference between the two prevailing parties of capital is a little threadbare these days.
@TheElevenator
Yes, but for me it still does not really apply to police because the entire institution of police is bad from the roots, not merely spoiled by bad individuals.
