The interior of a luxury car. There is a dagger protruding from the steering wheel. The entertainment console has been replaced by the text 'You wouldn't download a car,' in MPAA scare-ad font. Outside of the windscreen looms the Matrix waterfall effect. Visible in the rear- and side-view mirror is the driver: the figure from Munch's 'Scream.' The screen behind the steering-wheel has been replaced by the menacing red eye of HAL9000 from Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey.'

The #Clarion #ScienceFiction and #Fantasy #WritersWorkshop summer fundraiser is almost over! I am an alum, instructor and volunteer board member for this nonprofit workshop whose alums include Octavia Butler, Kim Stanley Robinson, Bruce Sterling, Nalo Hopkinson, Kameron Hurley, Nnedi Okorafor, Lucius Shepard, and Ted Chiang! Your donations will help us subsidize tuition for students, making Clarion - and sf/f - more accessible for all kinds of writers:

Autoenshittification: enshittifying one's self?
Technofeudalism is absolutely perfect. I've been struggling for the right words to use to yell at Orange Site loons who think all this bullshit is a good idea. The world is drowning in passive income scams.

The more I see the effects of enshittification in the auto sector, the more I'm grateful for my "Dumb Car"

Cami (my 1991 Tpyota Camry wagon) can't do all the "cool" things, but at the end of the day, there is no technology that could bar me from using the car I bought. No spaceman in the cloud to brick her should I act out of turn or become too broke to afford a subscription service.
My question now is: are then any auto makers who will sell me a car that is NOT like this...
How does this manifest in healthcare?

Long covid clinics are closing as demand increases because more patients means they can't afford to stay open.

Where is the rentier in this system? Is it the insurance companies? Or is it that people can't afford the actual costs (or don't find the actual costs reasonable to pay)?

Is the answer capitalism - services that make more money when demand increases?
