TIL what happens when reports of CSAM hit a federated instance of Mastodon — with implications for any platform hosted on an .xyz domain.

Here's how my Mastodon account went down along with the entire mastodon.xyz instance:

@Chris Messina This situation is nothing more than a materialization of concerns that were already raised a few years ago with the takeover of domain registries by private corporations ( https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/icann-can-stand-against-censorship-and-avoid-another-org-debacle-keeping-content ) , which decided to change the early good practice that the registrar is not in the business of censoring content. There are other authorities and other procedures for that.
It remains only to warn against buying other domains from CentralNic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CentralNic , as well as from other companies that follow similar practices and have hundreds of domains under their control - such as Identity Digital
