Ein entsprechender MAPCSS-Stil musste her!

JURD’S LAKE Woodland vestiges of the picturesque
Jurd’s Lake was part of the picturesque grounds of Weston Grove House, the former estate of Southampton MP William Chamberlayne in the 19th Century.
Today it is an area of established woodland, with pleasant flowery glades to explore. You may even find broad-leaved helleborine during the early summer.
The small lake and reed beds are a unique habitat. Willow warblers have previously nested here. Through careful landscape managernent a variety of butterflies can be found including purple hairstreak, small skipper and six spot burnet moth.
Himalayan balsam is widely found in the area, spread along the stream. The seed heads explode firing their seeds distances of over 20 feet. Although it looks attractive the fast-growing plant competes with native species and the shallow roots errode the stream bank.
SPECIES TO LOOK OUT FOR • Broad-leaved helleborine (ochid) • Purple hairstreak (butterfly) • Six spot burnet (moth)
Did You Know? Not all moths fly at night. There are several day flying moths including thesiz spot burnet moth.

Thought I’d give editing my home town a go again ( have been here before). Please forgive me for any mistakes, it will not have been intentional. I see some issues with POIs for example a police station that doesn’t exist anymore the adjacent firestation is still there with POI. Do I remove the POI or just remove the info attached? When it’s a shop or a former bank I think I probably should remove the info and leave the point….. if anyone has any pointers on where to get guidance on this that would be nice, otherwise I’ll keep looking for guidance!

I have just spent the last 2 months “intensely” making observations around lesser populated areas in WA’s southwest almost solely from the vehicle drivers seat. I then enter that data into OSM ID most afternoons/nights.
The tools;
Most of the data is by voice prompts that are reviewed afterwards, but a small proportion come from only viewing (mainly) the 270 camera images of shop etc fronts and signs. It is surpising how useful the multiple camera views are.
Voiced items;
The tools;
- Forward looking 8.3MP/4K dashcam 2FPS
- Left facing (270 degrees) old Samsung 8MP phone 0.3FPS
- Left rear facing (225 degs) 1.3MP webcam 1FPS
- The dashcam records audio (my voice) in one minute chunks
- All photos and audio are geo-referenced to their current location
- The Garmin navigation GPS has a current OSM based map, a POI set of all WA stopping places from MRWA and any OSM FixMe’s.
Most of the data is by voice prompts that are reviewed afterwards, but a small proportion come from only viewing (mainly) the 270 camera images of shop etc fronts and signs. It is surpising how useful the multiple camera views are.
Voiced items;
- Every road surface change paved vs unpaved on route. (incl concrete bridges)
- Any road calming objects (humps and chicanes) and gates on existing roads
- Any one-way road situations and associated signage.
- Road surface left and right of track (surprising how many are not currently valid)
- Verify road names signs vs Garmin GPS and voice differences. (including missings)
- Verify waterway names signs vs Garmin GPS and voice differences. (including missings)
- Voice any obvious missing public cross etc roads or major private ones (eg sealed mine roads)
- Voice all bridge names (if they exist)
- Respond to FixMe’s (many an unknown water crossing!)
- Respond to any WA stopping places. (The Garmin will show “Parking” if it is already on OSM, so could be ignored)
- Voice any obvious informal parking areas (like stockpile/gravel pit areas) plus any formal not in the MRWA POI’s
- Voice any farm/property names/type
- Voice as many town/other objects as possible, priority to Fire, Police, Ambulance, Post Office & Telstra but try to get all shops, parks, recreation grounds, playgrounds, toilets, camp areas, dump points, water points/tanks, fuel stops, rest areas, touristy things, information boards, welcome signs, comms towers, windpumps, large dams etc as possible.
- The photos (with certain filtering) are also uploaded to Mapillary, but I don’t actually use the current set with ID.
- How I enter/edit is covered in previous diary posts. The basic flow though is to scroll each 1 minute segment of the forward dashcam ONLY at the active audio point. Then use all camera views, the overhead imagery and what I have voiced to edit ID.

I’d used the OSM editor for work some time ago, and decided to practice a bit- using my own stomping grounds as the subject material.
I don’t know if any Locals are trying to keep up with the Town’s alterations, but I still haven’t fixed ‘Costumes, Balloons, and Stuff;’ It’s still on the map despite having closed Six and a Half Years Ago. I’ll get it next time. ((Not that I want to. I really miss that place.))
I fixed a few of the nagging sidewalk issues, and some of the more popular buildings and businesses. Remove the demolished bridge, that sort of thing.
That’s it. I just wanted OSM to reflect the local reality.

Rooftop area in Kathmandu Valley. I am interested in estimating the total rooftop area of Kathmandu valley residential homes. It will be helpful in order to estimate the solar PV potential of the valley.

Today being the 11th day of February, 2023, I took the decision to join the OSM training after some persuasion from my friends who have been a part of this community. The training this morning opened my eyes to quiet a lot of things as it concerns the global mapping community. Before the commencement of the training, I received a T-shirt and a bag, which made me feel I was already a part of Unique Mappers Network.
I didn’t know what to expect but I can confidently say now that I am glad I took the decision to attend. In the course of the training, it came as a surprise that I was actually interested in what was being done as I started to find it educative and interesting. There were some initial difficulties I experienced especially in learning how to map a community but I didn’t let it deter me.
I gained the knowledge of what Open Street Mapping is all about, being that it deals with the local and global community at large. I learned that Open Street Map is a global map of the world that is open to the people as it is a humanitarian service geared towards helping people in need.
This evening, I joined the zoom meeting of which I gained better clarity on how to map on HOTOSM. We were encouraged towards mapping the disaster struck Turkey as a way to enable search and rescue teams have better access to buildings that may have been struck in the course of the Earthquake.
At the moment, I’ve mapped over a hundred buildings and roads In Turkey and would continue to do so with the knowledge that this is my contribution to community development and a humanitarian service to the world.
