For the past week or so I've been testing @PeerTube 's remote runners. Basically the ability to transcode videos (even live streams) via remote servers. It can even be your laptop. We tested with my main machine (my laptop) and a remote server.

EASY!

The first thing that I love is the ease of setting it up. On my Peertube it is as easy as registering a new token (click a button) then give this token to a friend who can use their computer as a runner. The friend only needs a Linux machine and 3 commands as shown here https://docs.joinpeertube.org/support/doc/tools#register to register. Once registered the friend has to do "peertube-runner server" in a terminal and leave it open. All setup.

They should probably work on a daemon that can run in the background. But that's easy peasy. I also expect to see packages for the runner so it autoupdates. These will come. @YunoHost is already working on a package https://github.com/YunoHost-Apps/peertube_remote_runner_ynh

So to set it up is crazy simple.

IT WORKS!

We tested it with 2 machines as I said, my laptop and a server. The transcoding is 10-20 times faster than on our main server. And that's amazing. It even works for livestreams like a charm. We tested up to 2GB 2h long files. It works, but for such big files there needs to be a bit of improvement. We talked about it on their gitub page.

Basically the way it works is this: your computer will download the video from Peertube locally, then convert, then upload to Peertube. For this you'll also need a good internet connection. Also, you can't just share tokens with strangers since they could manipulate the video and have access to any videos that people will upload. So this has to be done in a secure and respectful manner.

All in all, this is FABULOUS! We can use local computers to do the remote transcoding or rent servers specifically designed for that. This means Peertube is even more scalable.

This year I plan to move out Peertube videos https://videos.trom.tf to an object storage so that we can scale that up nicely. Plus set up a few remote transcoders so that the transcoding will be super fast and reliable.

Oh and the live chat (via the main plugin) works wonders. You can join in even without an account. Amazing! I know they plan to integrate it into Peertube directly. Awesome!

I am not a developer. But I do help with testing and debugging as much as possible. I am confused by your first comments about "my identity" and such. But anyway. If you find any bugs please report them to Peertube's Github. I am doing the same. The developers are doing a ton of work and for the past months implemented a suite of wonderful features. You found a bug with the language filter, I suppose they should be interested to fix it if you report it.

Not much else to say. I just like Peertube and use it a lot. It works really great, but as with any piece of software it cannot be perfect.

I don't really have an account on Peertube specifically but I still follow some Peertube channels from my Mastodon account and also on the Newpipe mobile app. So while it may be true that Peertube lacks a bit in discoverability features (like the english filter not working), in my experience its pretty usable once you find some good channels to follow. And you don't even need a Peertube account for any of it, so its definitely a different experience than ytb.

I agree getting creators over is the hard part, that is hard to do when most of them directly or indirectly depend on Google to make their money. But there are also creators like @tio who make good quality videos & even massive documentaries that he then just releases on Peertube for free, so for creators like that who don't do it for money this is a great platform (tho I know they're rare).

I do not see why "creators" would not use Peertube other than "they cannot make money there because they do not reach many people". As @Rokosun said I am primarily and for the past years only on Peertube. I have just released a 5 hours documentary only on Peertube. We have over 70 video casts there and hundreds of other videos. I do not see what would "prevent" me from using Peertube. It is so much faster, cleaner, and saner than youtube.

Also Newpipe allows me to watch and subscribe to both YouTube and Peertube channels, which is pretty cool because then you get to make use of both platforms in one unified interface without sacrificing on either of them. So I guess an app like that is probably more appealing to casual users.

There are plenty of maps available, each centered around a different topic (for example: playgrounds, public toilets, shops, public bookcases, waste containers and a map linking to the wikipedia article of the person/item a street is named after).

From a preliminary ~12h sample of #bluesky / #atprotocol , a small number of accounts receive most interactions. This is an obvious byproduct of the way the default algorithmic feed prioritizes posts.

- 5% of accounts received 72% of likes, 1% of accounts received 41%
- The top 5% of accounts make 48% of posts
- 37% of accounts receive no interaction
- The median account received 1 like.

Just a quick, incomplete look, but ya looks like an engagement farm

If the network was "flat" where everyone received the same amount of interaction, the line would be a straight, diagonal line. The amount of convexity in the line indicates the degree to which the network's interactions are concentrated on the top accounts.

Of course one wouldn't expect engagement to be completely flat, where everyone talks to everyone else the same amount, what I'm more focused on here is how being in the bottom 95% of accounts makes you effectively invisible - even to your friends. That part seems distinctly unhealthy to me, and is I think probably a big contributor to the already-apparent pattern of dogpiles and main characters that's emerging over there.

I really hate treating interactions like a commodity or a currency, so doing this kind of quantification feels gross to me, but numbers like this are an imperfect way of capturing some of the social dynamics of a system. I probably won't have time for a more complete graph analysis for awhile, so I'm just going to be taking periodic samples of the network to be able to compare these kinds of trends over time, particularly before/after any "federation" if it ever is to happen.

of course this kind of analysis shouldn't necessarily be possible - people's interactions should be their own business. I'm not storing post contents or resolving any DIDs. Part of what I think is important here is how the system is designed to make privacy impossible, so trying to figure out ways to show that without, yno, breaching the sort of implicit privacy ppl expect

but in short the pathway from posting to viewing is
personal data store -> big graph indexing service -> feed generator -> app view

So say you want to have a private account - you can't block the big graph services because there's no way of knowing what feeds your friends are using on the app. The algo feeds displace the 'home' feed which theoretically can be direct PDS to PDS, so the only way to be seen is to be scrapable.

@tomasz Działalność obywatelska w postaci inicjatyw ad-hoc, prowadzonych bez żadnych struktur, faktycznie jest praktycznie zmonopolizowana przez platFormę na której "są wszyscy". Ale... potencjał zmiany jest i trzeba go szukać (tzn łapać 😁) tam i wtedy, kiedy jakaś obywatelska działalność z nieformalnego "pospolitego ruszenia" zamienia się w coś bardziej zorganizowanego. Niekoniecznie chodzi o osobowość prawną, bardziej o taki moment kiedy luźne gadanie na facebooku zamienia się w jakieś konkretne zadania, które trzeba zaplanować, rozdzielić między ludzi, tworzyć przy tym jakieś dokumenty a to wszystko jeszcze w podgrupach, które powinny się ze sobą komunikować ale jednocześnie mieć własne wirtualne miejsce na to co robią. I to jest ten moment, kiedy jakieś bardziej ogarnięte jednostki z grupy zaczynają rozumieć, że potrzebna im jest do pracy platforma z prawdziwego zdarzenia, którą facebook tylko udaje. I to jest również ten moment, kiedy te "ogarnięte jednostki" zaczynają szukać alternatywy. Kierując się jednak głównie zestawem dostępnych usług, popularnością i ceną. A rzadko tym czy platforma jest oparta na #foss, czy będą faktycznie kontrolować swoje dane pod kątem przenośności i prywatności. No i właśnie na tym etapie powinni "jakoś" trafić (i chociaż przetestować) te projekty, które robią co trzeba a przy tym są wolne, niekorporacyjne zdecentralizowane.
I teraz wypadałoby zrobić jakąś listę rekomendacji albo zlinkować do takowej. Ciekawe jakie wy macie doświadczenia i co moglibyście "fejsbukowiczom" polecić. Ja np, poza takimi platformami pracy grupowej "ogólnego użytku" jak #nextcloud robiłem ewaluację kilku bardziej specjalizowanych pod działalność obywatelską (czyli m.in. debaty, podejmowanie decyzji, praca w podgrupach) i z wartych uwagi to np #loomio, #decidim, #adhocracy, #citizenos. Wszystkie #foss, z opcją #selfhosting 'u aktywnie rozwijane i sprawdzone w dużych organizacjach. Niestety, żadna z wymienionych nie ma struktury federacyjnej. Poza nextcloud, w którym widzę wielki potencjał pod warunkiem, że doprowadzą do porządku kilka rzeczy m.in aplikację, która konto na nexcloud uczyni pełnoprawnym uczestnikiem fediverse.

Mobilizon jest sfederowany. Posiada grupy, które można obserwować na fedi. Aby do takiej wstąpić, trzeba mieć jednak konto na Mobilizonie (a może Friendica też zadziała?). Grupa może organizować wydarzenia (tylko dla członków lub publiczne - te drugie pojawią się jako wpis grupy), zamieszczać ogłoszenia (tylko dla członków, tylko z linkiem, publiczne - też jako wpis), dyskusje (dla członków) i zasoby - zbiór odnośników.

@robin I agree. I want fedi to grow, and I want people in the walled gardens to have an easier off-ramp from there onto fedi, but the reason I want this is because of fedi's norms and focus on moderation, safety, community building.

If the cost of growth is to throw these out the window, that growth is meaningless.

newer options can be opened up if the mastodon software is updated to introduce an actual user level "block server" functionality. Right now the user level "block server" option performs hide instead of block.

Users on Camp Twitter servers will be free to block servers from their content, while users on Camp small communities will be able to add servers to their user level server whitelist (subjected to the server level server blocks, which can be compulsory or whitelist-able).

Cześć :) Może znasz już z Mastodona mój projekt #Wyprawa2023, w którym dokumentuję przygotowania do dwumiesięcznej wyprawy rowerowej po Polsce, z przyczepką bagażową i panelem fotowoltaicznym na niej.

Pojawiło mi się okno możliwości oraz zaproszenie do Pieszowoli, do gospodarstwa agroturystycznego prowadzonego w starym dworze przez panią Elę, z którego postanowiłem skorzystać. Niedaleko (10km) od Pieszowoli mam również przyjaciół, z którymi zamierzałem się spotkać już dawno na #dewirtu, ale nie było jakoś okazji. Więc teraz jest :)

Ponieważ ta wyprawa to nie urlop, ale również moja normalna praca (jako spec z IT mogę podróżować i pracować, byleby był prąd dla laptopów i internet), to łączę wycieczkę rowerową moim mobilnym domem i biurem z podróżowaniem i odpoczynkiem.

It misses a few things that are in my recollection of those years, though. First of all, in my circles, we lived in the original ICQ client, and then in multi-protocol clients like Trillian, and Adium. The only reason we even knew or cared about XMPP is because it allowed those clients to talk to people on Google Talk, and Facebook Messenger.

Yes, Facebook used to support XMPP, too. After a while, it became a pain to use because the protocol didn’t support custom emojis, and it was removed.

What | have learned, however, is that Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners. Meta positions itself as a “savior’, because especially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything. In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding the moderation. Instances will have the option of allowing ads from Meta or not (with the benefit of additional compensation). Smaller instances will have the possibility to register for a federation with Meta in a second step, but there will be no financial compensation and Meta decides if they will grant access based on their reputation.
Regarding Meta, I'm in the industry for 25 years and have a few friends who worked at Meta from the early years until recently. One s stil there. Regarding UFol, | was part of the disussion at the time, we held a vote at Emacs.ch P R S But don' take this at face value, obvisouly these admins have to sign harsh NDAS. But it sounded very credible and | could not imagine it going any ther way. Examples of big instances (from Japan | believe?) show that the long-term burdens are simply unbearable and operators just wait for the right moment to e 1donot critizise Meta for their attempt to use the favor of the hour to their ‘advantage. As a public corporation its theijob to make proft. As I said, its not them who will decide the fate of the Fediverse. ‘Overworked/stressed out admins, high costs for infrastructure, ongoing disputes ‘and moderation challenges are what threaten the Fediverse. It was not meant to ‘9row o fast before we find common solutions for these issues. What do you think?

I can see a scenario where Meta Money becomes necessary to maintain large instances. Then Meta reduces the payout or simply stops paying the instances. The instances go bankrupt and sell themselves to Meta, giving them what they really wanted in the first place.

The real world analogy is the IMF and China saddling poorer nations with debt and then extracting a heavy cost through austerity and confiscation of resources.

Meta could try to accelerate this process by supporting feature creep in the fediverse software - increasing memory and bandwidth demands with little gain for users. We need to all stay focused on what makes fediverse interaction precious and not be distracted by bells and whistles.

Another is simply increasing the complexity of the codebase, build process, and hosting requirements to the point that it's beyond the reach of private individuals or even mid-sized organisations.

Hey fedi admins? Don’t just defederate/block Facebook/Meta. Put some time right now into figuring out what terms of service to have in place that will deny them the right to harvest data. Chat Control i podobne próby odarcia nas z prawa do prywatnej komunikacji są opakowywane w narrację o „ukrywaniu się w ciemnościach” (ang. „going dark”) w odniesieniu do faktu, że coraz więcej naszej cyfrowej korespondencji odbywa się szyfrowanymi kanałami, do których służby nie mają już tak łatwego dostępu.

Jak gdyby zupełnie naturalna potrzeba prywatności — z której nikt nikomu nie musi się tłumaczyć! — była z gruntu podejrzana. Jak gdyby naturalnym stanem rzeczy było to, że władza ma niczym nieograniczony, pełny i natychmiastowy dostęp do komunikacji dowolnych osób!

A przecież przez tysiące lat naturalnym stanem rzeczy była komunikacja bezpośrednia, rozmowa twarzą w twarz, której (bez współpracy świadka) nie dało się nadzorować wcale. To komunikacja zapośredniczona za pomocą narzędzi umożliwiających służbom podsłuch czy zdalny nadzór jest właśnie czymś dziwnym, zupełną nowością w historii ludzkości. Szyfrując naszą komunikację przywracamy więc sobie możliwość zupełnie naturalnej, ludzkiej, prywatnej komunikacji.

@rysiek Tak - to już 10lat. Dla młodszych prawie prehistoria. Ale bardzo dobrze udokumentowana. Warto szczególnie obejrzeć/przeczytać dokumenty autorstwa/z udziałem bezpośrednich uczestników wydarzeń: film "Citizenfour" Laury Poitras (nagrodzony m.in. Oscarem za najlepszy dokument) i wspomnianą w tekście autobiografię Snowdena, której polskie tłumaczenie ma tytuł "Pamięć nieulotna". Z tej książki taki (niestety...) polski akcent zacytuję:

"Podróżowaliśmy do Quito w Ekwadorze przez Moskwę, Hawanę i Caracas z tej prostej przyczyny, że była to jedyna bezpieczna trasa. Nie istniały bezpośrednie loty z Hongkongu do Quito, a wszystkie inne połączenia pośrednie prowadziły przez przestrzeń powietrzną należącą do USA. Martwiła mnie długa przerwa w podróży w Moskwie, gdzie mieliśmy czekać niemal dwadzieścia godzin na lot do Hawany, ale znacznie bardziej bałem się następnego etapu. Lot z Rosji na Kubę przecinał przestrzeń powietrzną NATO. Nie byłem szczególnie zachwycony perspektywą przelotu nad Polską, która w trakcie całego mojego życia robiła wszystko, żeby zadowolić amerykański rząd. Gościła nawet tajne więzienia CIA, gdzie moi byli koledzy z wywiadu stosowali wobec więźniów „wzmocnione techniki przesłuchań”, co jest eufemizmem z czasów ery Busha oznaczającym tortury."

czy ktoś to już testował? Założyłam jakiś czas temu konto na Instagramie, ale nigdy się z nim nie polubiłam. Od niedawna mam też konto na Pixelfedzie, chciałam na nie zaimportować część postów z Instagrama, no i chyba coś nie trybi. W opcjach na Pixelfedzie widzę info "These are posts that are in the process of being imported", ale postów jak nie było, tak nie ma mimo upływu kilkunastu godzin 🤔​

Tech Press don’t understand the #Fediverse, so how can they understand its growth?

To hear them talk, most of them believe that #Mastodon and the Fediverse are one and the the same. Some of them go so far as to call the Fediverse the “Mastodon network”.

Which means that they don’t have a clue about what the Fediverse entails, nor how it has grown.

Case in point: between Jan-May 2023, #Misskey and its forks grew by 300,000 accounts. No one in the Tech Press reported this.

Okay, perhaps they didn’t know because the bulk of growth happened in Japan. But still, this is fairly important to know since Misskey is now responsible for generating the bulk of Fediverse content. Even so, Tech Press think the Fediverse is about Mastodon.

And now, #Lemmy and #Kbin are experiencing lots of growth, with both collectively gaining 100,000 users in a week. This is quite a noteworthy event since the #RedditMigration is part and parcel of dissension on #Reddit – a pretty major Big Social platform.

Does the Tech Media report on this? Nope. But again, that’s because they don’t understand the Fediverse nor what it entails.

Then Meta signal that a new project they’re making, #P92 (a.k.a., #Barcelona), will be joining the Fediverse. There’s even screenshots that show this app interacting with remote Fediverse servers.

But instead of reporting about how this will affect the existing Fediverse, press such as the #BBC say this is an altogether different social network than Mastodon.

That’s right! Tech Press don’t even realize P92 will be joining the Fediverse – a social network that already exists!

Is this all ridiculous? Yes.

But this is why we have to be forthright about what the Fediverse is, what it entails, and why it all matters.

We, on the Fediverse, must be our own Press.
